Digging around in some old interior inspiration, I came across this photograph of a sunroom in Countess Dorothy DiFrasso’s Beverly Hills home by the renowned interior decorator Elsie de Wolfe. The wall mural entitled ‘Zebra and Black Panther with Cacti’ (1936) by Charles Baskerville was custom made for the home, and became the backdrop of many Golden Age Hollywood parties hosted by DiFrasso in the 30′s and 40′s. It’s amazing how modern this still looks today, and its relevance continues to inform style across interiors and fashion.

Color Theory ::: Soft 70′s http://thisisluster.com/2011/04/25/color-theory-soft-70s/ http://thisisluster.com/2011/04/25/color-theory-soft-70s/#comments Mon, 25 Apr 2011 22:13:40 +0000 Luster http://thisisluster.com/?p=967535691

The style of the 70′s has been influencing everything from fashion to music for the past couple of years. There is such a simplicity & softness that the palettes usually evoke, particularly with the desert-like nudes and fuzzy warm greys.

It has been so cold and rainy in New York these past few days –  definitely not the ideal Spring with the days becoming gradually warmer. But as the saying goes… here’s hoping for sunshine and blooms soon.

Color Theory ::: Night Lights http://thisisluster.com/2011/04/12/color-theory-fireworks/ http://thisisluster.com/2011/04/12/color-theory-fireworks/#comments Tue, 12 Apr 2011 04:01:21 +0000 Luster http://thisisluster.com/?p=967536115

Today I’m dreaming of balmy summer nights and long evening walks when everything fades except the city lights, soft and blurry in the distance. I used to take pictures of the street lamps when I lived in the suburbs, hoping for a confetti of blurry colored dots. I love movies and pictures showing LA at night for this reason.

There have been a few posts where I have covered color topics, but today I am officially starting a regular column called Color Theory based on color combinations. First up is Indigo and Peach, a perfect pair for Spring.

I Spy ::: Polka Dots http://thisisluster.com/2011/03/13/i-spy-polka-dots/ http://thisisluster.com/2011/03/13/i-spy-polka-dots/#comments Sun, 13 Mar 2011 06:00:53 +0000 Luster http://thisisluster.com/?p=967535511

I’m a girl who has always liked Polka Dots. They’re so fun and perky. Ever since I spied this Miu Miu blouse, I have been on the hunt for a polka dot blouse for spring in my price range. J.Crew had one in the fall that sold out very quickly, and so the search continues. It seems I am not the only one with spots and dots on my brain.

:::: Lilac Monday :::: http://thisisluster.com/2011/02/28/lilac-monday/ http://thisisluster.com/2011/02/28/lilac-monday/#comments Tue, 01 Mar 2011 00:25:17 +0000 Luster http://thisisluster.com/?p=967535188

Let’s face it, the highlight of the Oscars for most of us is watching glamourous dresses parade down the Red Carpet. Sadly though, I must admit this year there were very few dresses I really loved. So many of the dresses looked “already done” or just not special. Where was the WOW factor? Am I crazy? Do you agree or not? That said, I really enjoyed the lilac color Elie Saab worn by Mila Kunis in particular, and Cate Blanchett’s Givenchy. It filled me with Spring fever, so I had to hunt down some other lilac lovelies.

The bun is all the rage these days. Whether it’s a ballet bun, french bun or a top knot, it’s such a chic way to get all those messy tresses away from your face.

::: Hey, sailor ::: http://thisisluster.com/2011/02/07/hey-sailor/ http://thisisluster.com/2011/02/07/hey-sailor/#comments Tue, 08 Feb 2011 00:39:20 +0000 Luster http://thisisluster.com/?p=967534866

The Nautical trend has been hanging around for a couple of Spring/Summer seasons, and just about every clothing store you visit will have their version of the sailor striped boatneck shirt. Coco Chanel is credited for seeing the striped shirts worn by Breton sailors, and introducing her “marinière” shirt to the fashion world in 1917. They have never gone out of style. You could blame my Connecticut seashore upbringing, or the fact that my brother and I were dressed up in sailor suits when we were toddlers {see embarrassing photos below} but I am not sick of it yet.

1. Saint James Nautical Tee | 2. Sailboat wallpaper | 3. Striped pouches | 4. Compass, whistle and life preserver keychains | 5. Compass Pillow | 6. Sailboat Paper | 7. Whale tray | 8. Striped straw fedora | 9. Sailor Tote bag | 10. Rosewood Anchor falling knife | 11. Rope mirror | 12. Santa Rosa striped Espadrille | 13. Beside the Seaside Letterpress Print | 14. Forget me knot and Maritime Medallion necklaces by Madewell

{Above} Me on the left, my cousin, and my brother, just back from Newport probably. {Below} Me, in the family’s preferred toddler dress code: sailor style. {thanks a lot, Mom!} xo
